How to Choose a School Backpack — A Parent’s Guide

How to Choose a School Backpack — A Parent’s Guide

A school backpack gets carried twice a day, 180+ days a year — often at a tenth of the child's own weight. The wrong one doesn't just break by October; it affects posture. Here is what to check.

The 10–15% weight rule

Pediatricians recommend a loaded backpack stay under 10–15% of the child's body weight — for a 30 kg pupil, that's 3–4.5 kg including books. So the empty bag must be light: ideally under 1 kg for younger kids, under 1.5 kg for teens.

Ergonomics first

  • A firm, anatomically shaped back panel — the child should never feel book corners through it;
  • Straps at least 4 cm wide, padded and adjustable; the bag should sit against the back, not hang below the waistline;
  • A sternum strap keeps straps from sliding off shoulders;
  • Teach the child to always wear both straps — one-shoulder carry is the classic cause of posture problems.

Size by age and quality details

Primary school: 12–18 L, no wider than the child's shoulders. Middle school: 18–25 L with room for A4 folders. Teens and students: 20–30 L with a padded laptop sleeve — see our backpack collection. Check double stitching at strap anchors (the most common failure point), chunky zippers, a reinforced waterproof bottom, dense water-resistant fabric, and reflective elements for dark winter mornings.

Fitting the bag

Adjust straps so the panel touches the whole back with the top edge at shoulder level, and pack heavy books in the compartment closest to the body — the load feels noticeably lighter.
