Backpacks for Everyday and Travel — How to Choose
Backpacks have become the universal daily accessory: laptop to the office on Monday, hand luggage on a budget flight by Friday. But work and travel make different demands — here is what to check for each.
Capacity in liters
- 10–15 L — minimalist daily carry;
- 18–25 L — the sweet spot for work and university: laptop, charger, lunch, water;
- 28–35 L — travel backpack for 2–4 day trips or flying carry-on only;
- 40 L+ — longer trips, but increasingly hard to fit within carry-on limits.
The laptop compartment
A "laptop pocket" alone is not enough. Look for a padded sleeve that is suspended off the bottom of the bag (so setting the bag down never jolts the laptop), a size that matches your machine's real dimensions, and ideally a separate access zip so you can pull the laptop out at airport security without opening the main compartment.
Ergonomics and carry-on rules
Wide, padded S-curve straps, a ventilated back panel, and — above 25 liters — sternum and hip straps make weight disappear. A trolley sleeve that slides over a suitcase handle is invaluable in airports (pair it with something from our suitcase catalog). For flights from Georgia: Wizz Air's free allowance is 40×30×20 cm (a compact ~20 L backpack), while Priority and traditional carriers such as Georgian Airways allow roughly 55×40×20–23 cm — enough for a 30–35 L travel pack. Soft bags squeeze into sizers more forgivingly than rigid cases, but mind the weight limit.
Keeping the inside organized
One big empty cavity becomes chaos fast. Either choose a multi-compartment design or add packing cubes and organizers — a cable pouch alone transforms a travel bag.
